Thriller (pen & ink)

Nothing to do with Michael Jackson. This is a slightly more representative drawing than that captured in a previous post. I’ve sketched this lady a few times. She frequently sits beside another woman – also an avid reader.

Airport thrillers are bad for your brain – especially if read out of that context. This lady’s handbag caught my eye. It was amazingly complex, a real utility item; pockets, straps, zippers, heavy stitching, thick leather and jet black. Complete contrast to her leisure suit, soft shoes and heavily-patterned blouse. Maybe it was full of spy stuff. We shall never know.

Nike Boot Boy (pen & ink)

Like many people, this young man has oddly sized feet. It’s very common to have one slightly larger than the other. As casually dressed as he was, this guy was pin-sharp when it came to clothing. I couldn’t see a crease, but would almost swear that his jeans were ironed. Still, he’s cool.

Leisure Suit in Pen and Ink

This drawing is almost bordering on caricature. The man steadied himself with a cane and so wasn’t terribly mobile. I thought he would present the perfect subject; interesting and not terribly active, so plenty of time to study and capture the detail of the facial features and so on. Almost as soon as I started sketching, my pen leaked all over my hands. Sometimes these things are meant to happen. Rather than stop, I just used the ink on my fingers to smear in the background and to denote a little texture on the suit.

Too many late nights on the books, or maybe the PS3. I’d guess he was about fifteen the pose made him look a lot older. You see kids on the early trains and they’re full of life but not so much in the evenings. Still, if I had to carry a bag of books half my size, I might not be so perky either.
