Thinking Deeply (about nothing)

April 20, 2010

Pondering, pondering, pondering. Wonder what’s for dinner? Anything on telly? What to do at the weekend? What’s that guy scribbling and looking at me? What will I do? I know: stare him down, through my bug-eyed sunnies.

Walcha’s Got Everything (pen and ink wash)

IMG_0004

I drew this at the Gunnedah markets, in the same session as the Apple Eater lady. In this instance, the subject was a stall owner who was chatting to a companion. They were lamenting the sorry state of affairs in the locality, whereby the neighbouring town of Walcha allegedly receives every benefit imaginable to mankind while their locality does it hard. I can’t comment other than to say that either is a nice place to visit. Had a flying saucer landed in the middle of the markets, her response would have been, “a bigger one landed in Walcha last week.” Behind it all, she was having the time of her life, though.

In this sketch, I did my best to capture her weathered, somewhat resigned and slightly laconic disposition.

Lonsdale Lady

Lonsdale Lady

My bag and I are the hottest thing ever, except maybe my shoes. My hair – that’s pretty cool too. Unusual, without being overstated. That’s what I said to the hairdresser – he’s very good, I’ll go there again. The bag though, sets it all off. No? What would you know about fashion anyway?

Afro

0753_001.tifThis is the kind of hair that can receive signals from space. Wiry and radial. Very difficult to read in the drawing online but in my sketchbook, you can see the little doodle of a scissors and a comb in the newspaper.

Bun Lady

bunlady

A hairstyle you don’t see too often these days. Reminds me of a (terrible) joke: did you hear about the woman who was electrocuted at a bakery? She stood on a bun and the currant ran up her leg. Boom boom. I’ll wager the lady in the picture would not approve.
