Hornsby Art Prize Entry

October 30, 2010

After much uhmming and awhing, decided to enter the image of the hunched seated model in the Hornsby Art Prize this year.

I considered this one – which is my preference but it just didn’t have it in the frame. Needs a background colour to push it out, I think?

Not The Worst Day, As Such (oil pastel, ink and wash)

Not the best either. Had to dig deep for inspiration on this one. This is a drawing that I re-visited, after creating the initial outline in pencil, I inked it and then overlaid the colours and tone with oil pastel before adding a final layer of ink wash and more outlining. The model was a little apathetic or maybe laconic.

Study in line and form

Figure drawing study

Lately, have attempted to use line to model form. Finding it harder to than expected. It’s always easier to fall back to old habits and the safety of what you know.

Warm-ups

A couple of 2 minute warmups from my lifedrawing class. Some models offer more challenging poses than others and it takes real physical control to hold these, even for a couple of minutes.

manprofileAnother from my lifedrawing sketchbook. The model didn’t show up (happens to the best of us), so people in the group took turns at posing. This is one of the people in the group. It’s quite interesting when you see other people’s drawings of you. A little like seeing video footage or hearing your own voice played back on a recording.
