Beneath The Surface

One of my sketchbook pages for Art-House Co-Op’s Sketchbook Project. The theme of my book is ‘Beneath The Surface’…

Signal to Noise

February 4, 2010

This drawing is back to front – the original image, drawn with a big, thick sharpie is on the other side of the page. I flipped the page over and hatched the outlines that bled through, then added some more linework. Just to see what would happen. I’m quite pleased with the effect. Sometimes peoples’ accessories – such as this man’s glasses – can be more eye-catching than their facial features, which sometimes melt into the background noise of the crowd.

Crowded train

I didn’t realise at the time that the lady with the massive sunglasses was reading the newspaper over the shoulder of the man in front. Most of this drawing is one continual line. The hatching on the left is the main exception.

Sharpie rough

December 14, 2009

I wasn’t terribly happy with the underlying scribble (drawn very quickly with a fountain pen), so I decided to vandalize it with a sharpie. I prefer the graffiti version.

Brolly Boy (Pen & Ink)

Brollyboy

Midweek evening, flowers in hand. Love token? Peace offering? Commiserations? There is confidence in the posture but the umbrella suggests that this is someone who arrives prepared for a sudden turn in the weather.

horned god on iphone

You’re a horned deity with time to kill on your commute. What are you going to do? Fiddle with social media. What else?

Puck Ascends His Throne (Sharpie)

Granted, I didn’t see this guy on the train. This is a sketch-rough for an idea that I’ve been playing with as a lead-up to an art competition entry. Dead rough, odd as you like. Straight-up.
